Hi all. Occasionally I get daring and try looking at possible reading
matter for books and magazines. I came across subscription for Fantasy
and science fiction magazine which I've always enjoyed. It lists digital
formats that I assume you use with your handheld whatever. Not having
paid much attention to these kind of developments, I was wondering if any
of these are usable by us? I know audible dot com needs win to use I
guess, ***but I see mention of some kind of mp3 in the following. So, can
mplayer or some of our apps read any of this sort of thing? Here's th
excerpt:

nd Science Fiction - Secure Order Form (p2 of 6)
Available Formats: Adobe Acrobat (PDF), Palm Reader (PDB),
Rocket/REB1100
(RB), Microsoft Reader (LIT), Franklin eBookMan (FUB), Hiebook (KML),
iSilo
                          (PDB), Mobipocket (PRC)
                        ____________________________

                                audible.com
PC Digital Audio: PocketPC models, Apple iPod, Audible Otis, Rio
players,
Iomega HipZip, Visor with AudibleAdvisor, Digisette Duo-Aria MP3 player,
Franklin eBookman PDA, Palm OS5 handhelds
Mac (Mac OS X and iTunes3) Digital Audio: Apple iPod, Audible Otis

Thanks much.

AAlmost any of those formats will work for us. I've used pdb, lit,
and pdf as well as standard mp3 formats. The easiest by far is to
download the pdb formats from fictionwise, (since they're not
encrypted as they are directly from f&sf) then run a script on it to
convert it back to text, then use any reader you like. I'd give you
the name of the package I use, but I can't think of it at the
moment. I'll dig it up next time I'm on the linux box, and send it
along.

TTake a look at http://www.fictionwise.com and look at their
magazines. There's quite a few. http://www.palmdigitalmedia.com has
some too, but I think they're mostly repeats of what fictionwise
has. Analog Science fiction magazine, Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction
Magazine, Ellery Queen, Alfred Hitchcock's mystery magazine, Fantasy
and Science fiction, Handheld computing, and a few others as well.
It's really worth the look. They're not free, but it is generally
worth the subscription price.
