Hi all. I'm planning to build courier-mta on my box to replace sendmail.
I have one question before I start: will mutt work with courier? I know
it uses the local mta to send email but will courier work?

Courier can emulate sendmail, so as long as you have a link where mut
expects to find it, it should work fine. Generally in /usr/sbin/sendmail or
/usr/lib/sendmail.

Another way to do it is make a link in /usr/sbin called sendmail to point
to the real sendmail in /usr/lib/courier/bin/sendmail. Or is it sbin? I
don't remember at the moment.

Alex and I haven't started using it, but as far as reading about it it
looks very good. It includes a webmail cgi script that offers webmail
access, an imap server, pop3 server, and an ESMTP server. It also supports
different types of authentication such as PAM. It can also make use of
Modssl by having the webmail server use an extension to it. This makes it
so passwords can be sent over SSL. I would say this MTA is a good
replacement for Sendmail
and exim.

besides, sendmail is dropping in popularity. while it used to have a
huge portion of the market it's now dropped to somewhere around 50% of
the mail servers.

Hi all.
I lost the original messages to which I am replying to, so I'm doing
it below in one go.
First, somebody asked where you can get the glibc patch for qmail.
1. Go to
http://www.qmail.org
2. Select a mirror close to you.
3. Search for "glibc", that should take you to the 517th link.
Second, somebody asked how you get mutt to read Maildir mailboxes.
In my /etc/profile under slackware I have the following, since my
entire system has Maildirs in the user's home directories.
#set mail options
export MAIL="$HOME/Maildir"
#done
Now, assuming all your users have their mailboxes in
/home/user/Maildir, mutt will open that on startup.
