Hi, I just downloaded the speakup modified version of fedora core 7 DVD iso.
Before I burn it to a DVD disc does anyone else on this list know if this
latest version works with the dectalk express synthisizer? Also does fedora
core 7 support the reiserfs file system as that is what I am use to using
and would to continue using it if possible?

I believe the DEC-Talk drivers remain broken. I believe Fedora supports
Kirk's fs--but you can easily google that info.

> Greetings all,
Granted this wisdom may be dated, but ages back the guidance was, at least
with Debian, to install the full server unless one was strong in customizing
since that way you had all of the tools you needed.
This may have changed but if one prefers a fully loaded package distribution,
how much hard drive space should one anticipate needing? Just a general guess
  is fine.
  Thanks,
  Karen

Hi.

I think you mean Redhat when you say "full server". On my Debian box running a complete Gnome desktop,
I use around 4 Gig of disk space. If I remember Ubuntu desktop also uses around 4 Gig.
Can't say for any other distros. I'm sure users of those distros will jump in and answer.

The Dectalk drivers are not broken. It's the probing for the serial port
that is the problem. In the case of Slackware 12.0, which uses 2.6.21.5,
it is necessary to pass the serial port on the command line. For example,
"speakup_synth=dectlk speakup_ser=0" would be right for a Dectalk Express
on /dev/ttyS0. So, try this with Fedora and others using 2.6.21.X
kernels.

with deb? I never seen more than a gb, and that was with updates. I just
installed the needed packages. I did try to limit my packages, but I got
what was needed from apt. didn't use x-windo or anything.
Thanks,

Well I can't comment on any of the other distros, but I think slackware
fully installed is between 3 and 4 gigs.

Okay,
I just did some looking in my speakup folder here on shellworld, where i
keep all of the posts from this list and blinux.
ahem it is over 14 thousand strong now, dating back to i kid you not 2004.
So, I am going to wisely assume times have changed.

As a result let me ask the following.
I do not wish if I can help it to compile allot of programs, or
not at first, preferring a
distro with as many packages included as possible. I will be using a
Dec talk express on a machine with a real serial port. i will also be
using whatever Linux distro I choose as the second os, with DOS being my
main operating system.
I understand that spider monkey?, is needful for some of the more java
script related browsers, but have no memory of it discussed here...not
saying it has not been.
I desire being able to listen to streaming audio, I suppose capture in a
simple way.
Will welcome ftp too, although some of that can be done on shellworld,
perhaps a way to send something to my shellworld ftp for sending to
someone else, or taking down some of my files from shellworld via ftp.
The machine I will use has already a 20gb hard drive, and I must leave
some space for my present c and d drives in my present Dos machine.
I realize I may want to get a larger drive before trying the Linux part of
my life, but may not have time before I move, so want to know what I am
in for.
I will keep many functions in Dos like my word processing, etc.
Now that I have been i really hope more clear, which do I need debian or
Fedora, or something else?
Which has the best support for the dec express?
Forgive me if this is baby stuff, but I want to make an informed decision in
advance.
Thanks,
Karen

Hi, Will this issue be fixed in the speakup version that works with 2.6.22
for the dectalk express? It would be nice if it were fixed.
