Hi, One thing I have found is it is not possible to type for example at
the boot prompt of a live CD or in lilo linux speakup_synth=dectlk
speakup_rate=0 and other such options even if speakup is built into the
kernel or as a module option. The reason I bring this up is I like my
dectalk express at rate 0 as the default rate that is set in speakup is a
little faster then I can handle. This is why it would be nice to be able
to set these at load time not after booting threw either proc or the
speakup review keys. It could also be a configuration option in the
kernel configuration when building speakup.

When you're booting up, I think you can use the rate keys. When installing FC6 or booting up with the GRML CD, I often changed the rate, volume, and two punctuation levels right after I heard "LiteTalk found." When the system's installed, I put my settings in /etc/rc.local. I hope this helps, and apologize if I miss what the problem is you're trying to solve.

Hi, well that is a good thing but it would be even better if they were
command line or module or configuration options, this way no changing rc
scripts and that does not really allow you to hear all of the boot messages
with the rate, pitch and other settings right from booting. This is why I
would like it configurable at boot time so I could just put the settings in
grub or module options and the speakup screen reader would automatically
start with the settings you want, no later changing them. If you are
listening to a message and fsck is running with the punc_level set to the
default I always get dashes and slashes as it is checking the filesystem.
If I could set the level to 0 upon boot then I would not hear these messages
and I don't really like hearing those anyway.

I've thought myself more then once that this would be a nice feature to
have. The problem with adjusting speech parameters as soon as the synth
is found while the system boots, is that you are doing so while
speakup is still sending text to the synth. So, if you're lucky,
you'll hear each and every change taking effect with quite a delay. If
you're not lucky, then you'll press a key combination too many times,
and will wind up with something that you didn't mean to end up with,
and that result may be worse then the default parameters.

Then again, I've been meaning to look at the speakup code in detail
for a while now, along with reading up on how to program the kernel,
but haven't gotten to it so far, and don't know when I will. Of
course, Kirk would be fully justified if he responded to this with "so
code it, and submit a patch if you want it."

Hi, well when speakup starts it changes my rate from zero to nine upon
speakup load. Could all of these settings be changed or set threw
command line options rather then being hard coded into the dectalk
express or what ever synthisizer driver the user was using at the time?
It even would be better if they could be set upon compilation and
command line option so you would have the best of both worlds. Looking
on the speakup site I see no information on how to check in sources or
changes, am I missing something? On Sat, 21 Apr 2007, Gregory Nowak wrote:

I seem to recall reading somewhere that you need to generate a unified diff,
and e-mail the result to Kirk. I suppose if you were planning to
contribute code on a regular basis, and if that code was of a quality
acceptable to Kirk, you could probably get write access to the cvs/gid
repository.

Hi, really the command line options would be very nice and also support
for USB and paralell port synthisizers. I would really see changing or
setting the rate, pitch, and pun_level at boot a really good option
espcially when booting a new installation or live CD and wanting to hear
everything that is going on at a rate you want to hear it at and not one
set by default. Really this should not be that hard to make happen as
when the driver starts up normally it sets the paramaters to defaults.
It could be made both configuration options in the kernel for each
synthisizer and plus command line options so if user gave input that
would be used instead of the defaults. On Sun, 22 Apr 2007, Gregory Nowak
