Hi all:
I'm back with a fresh install of Fedora thanks to some awesome help from
Bill. Just a couple questions though. First, How can I get my system to
automaticly get my DHCP info at startup? When I initially log in whether
root or my personal login, I usually have to su to root and issue a
dhclient eth0 command before I will have internet access. My network card
is set up to activate on boot. Any ideas?
Lastly, I am having a hard time getting gnopernicus to come up talking when
X is started. When in X, I can do an alt+f-2, type in gnopernicus and it
will speak, but if I simply issue a startx command, nothing. Any
suggestions or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot,
Guy

Hi. Try enabling the screen reader in the accessibility menu. Don't
save your session on logout of gnome unless you want multiple copies of
gnopernicus running.
Press alt-f1 to get to the applications menu and choose accessibility
from the main menu.
Could Fedora users tell me if I'm right about the location of the
accessibility menu? My answer is based on how Debian's Gnome 2.4 works.
Hope this helps.

Bring up the start menu by hitting alt+f1 and from there, go to
"preferences" sub menu. Arrow right into that menu and choose
"assistive technology" and hit "enter".
Make sure the check boxes for accessibility and screen reader are
checked and hit "ok". Now, Gnopernicus should come up talking.

Thanks Krister. I'll have to try that when I get home from work
tonight. Also, I was able to obtain some info regarding my Ethernet card
problem if anyone has any input. When booting up, I hear the message
"unable to find link. Check cable" or something to that effect. When I
get logged in as root, I can do dhclient eth0, and everything is cool, but
is there a way to make Linux obtain my DHCP info on bootup automatically?
Thanks much,
Guy

go to
http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gap/testing/gnopernicus.html
that will tell you how to get gnopernicus to run on startup.

Hi my name is john
I have been reading and searching for info on how to install a linux distro
on my computer del4550.
which has a win xp install on ntfs.
I looked at the zipslack, notice it only discuss about installing on fat32
file system.
my only option is to install on a usb external harddrive,
during my research, I have found a belkin ide harddisk usb enclosure, which
will enable me to have a external ide harddrive, rather then a second
internal drive, I could use the external drive as a backup as well as linux
distro.
any suggestions or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot,

Why not put a second hard drive inside the dell, and then install Linux
to the second drive. Then all you would need to do is at the time of
boot select which OS you want to use.
BTW: There is a good how-to on linuxdocs.org that can tell you how to do
the multi OS configuration that I was just talking about. It was written
before XP, but the same would apply. There is also a way that you may
not have thought of yet, and that is to find a hard drive bay that
allows you to swap hard drives with out having to open the case. I
cannot think of the name of 1 right now, but they are out there. The
advantage to this would be that your dell would see the drive as
internal, and you would just put in the OS that you are wanting to use
at the time. Then you are not messing around with trying to boot from
USB.
Just my thoughts.
