redhat speakup distribution and lynx.

Hello listers.
I have just installed the redhat speakup distribution and I can't find the
lynx browser anywhere on my hard drive.
Isn't lynx included with the distribution or did i do something wrong? If
it's not there, can I download any rpm lynx package from the internet?

Hi, you can obtain the current version of Lynx from http://lynx.browser.org.
There may not be any RPM versions, but you can certainly build it from the
source tree.  However make sure that you have all required libraries
available, and the latest versionf of them.  Hope this helps.

I don't have much experience about libraries in linux. I am running redhat
7.3 system. Do you think that is possible that important libraries for this
task will be missing from the system?

Hi,
I'm sorry, but I can't  comment on any Redhat Distrobutions due to the fact
that I've never used any version of them.  however, what I would do in that
case is to get the source distrobution and build it from source, paying
attention to any instructions that may apply to Redhat systems.  if you're
familiar with building GNU software, this process should be pretty familiar.
You normally just btype make configure and the script will configure any
required localizations for Redhat, if there are any.

because you made an inauspicious installation class choice.
That is my conjecture, in any case. I'm wagering you chose
"workstation" or "laptop" instead of "server" or "everything"
at the "type of installation" screen. Those are not good
choices for blind users, and you have just discovered some of
the reason why they're not good choices.

All of this--the reasons for choosing one installation class over
another, how to fix a default for booting to the gui--all of this
is discussed in our installation HOWTO. Did you read it?

You need to find the rpm for lynx on your installation CD ROMs.
I'm sorry, I don't recall which one has it. Once you find it, do:

rpm -iv lynx*

He doesn't need to do anything this elaborate, and he would
almost certainly miss some settings, such as SSL support, were he
to try and dio this without due care.

Yes I have read the howto. I actually chose a custom installation but I may
have made mistakes as to what packages should go and what not.
I may probably have to install again and fix those problems.
I hope I am not bothering you much with questions, but is the beginning with
a new operating system and it is not easy.

Hi there.
In regard to Lynx and Red Hat you're fine.
You don't need to download an rpm package of Lynx.
If you installed the Speakup modified Red Hat distribution Lynx is on one 
of the cds, sorry I don't remember which one though I've installed it, 
nevertheless just mount the cd-rom and install from there.
I know you just installed so I don't know yur level of familiarity with 
Linux, as a result if any of what follows in my note are things you are 
already aware ofjust know that it wasn't my intent to insult your 
intelligence.
To see what cd has Lynx on it do the following til you find whether it's 
on cd 1, 2, or 3 in the case of 7.3 which is 3 cds as oppposed to 7.2 
which is only 2 not including the source rpms and the docs.
The dollar signs throughout these commands are used to represent the 
prompt on your system and quotes are for emphasis only.
(foo@localhost)
$ "mount /mnt/cdrom"
$ "cd /mnt/cdrom"
You're now at the root directory level of the cd in your cd drive.
$ "cd RedHat"
Note: the r and the h in RedHat are capitalized respectively
$ "cd RPMS"
Note: rpms is written all caps
Now that you are in the RPMS dir of a RedHat cd, do this command.
$ "dir lynx*"
If lynx is there on the cd you just mounted install with.
rpm -i lynx*
I find using the star as a wildcard easier than remembering the numbers 
version numbers of rpm packages though you could write out its fullname 
instad of using the asterisk.
If it was on that cd you're done.
Otherwise repeat procedure using other disks to check for lynx rpm package 
and then install.
Either way, two other things you might like to know are as follows:
To dismount your cd-rom which you mounted above the command is:
umount /mnt/cdrom
After it's unmounted you can eject it with:
eject /mnt/cdrom
If you receive an error telling you that the drive is busy when you try to 
unmount simply change to a dir not on the cd like /home/foo.
I hope this was some assistance and good luck with Linux.

Your message below Janina leads me to ask one question.
I setup this system using a server install and installed all the package 
groups other than the ones which were what I'll refer too as x package 
groups, kde, gnome, X-windows, etc for example, however; this did not 
install lynx, it installed only links and not both.
So, this brings up the question, did I do something wrong when I installed 
if I got only Links and not both Links and Lynx.
Or, does the server class install also not install Lynx.
I installed it after using rpm however I am curious and if I am correct 
the problem Nectarios describes is not a by-product of his installation 
choice, I.E. workstation vs server.
Do you have any thoughts.

To be truthful, I don't know exactly what packages of interest to
us are left out in a server class installation. I usually do
custom and everything. Or, if I don't, I go through the list of
packages to check for things I want. That is tedious, though. One
of these days I will make a list.

I did a custom install of RH 7.3 and selected everything except classic x,
legacy support, and skipped all the "servers" (DNS, WEB, etc).  That install
also did not install lynx.  I also couldn't find it on the first three cd's.
I ended up d/l'ing it through rpmfind.

Well, I guess this goes to show the importance of looking
throught the lists of selected packages, at least for
particularly important packages.

I don't know, of course, exactly what you checked and didn't.
You mention exceptions to "everything." Clearly, one of those
exceptions eliminated lynx.

It is in the rpms, on Disc 3. I went and checked, since you've
challenged my assertion.

I did not intend my post as a challenge.  I did not state that it was not
there, merely that I could not find it.  I did not do "select individual
packages" and I listed the "catagories" that I did not install and I
indicated that lynx was not installed based on those selections.  I was
reporting my experience, not questioning yours.  I apologize if that was not
made clear.  Thanks for letting us know what cd it's on, for future
reference that is valuable info.

OK. And, for my part, I hope my response was more to the
categorical statement rather to you as a person.

I don't recall all the details now, but you did name some things
you excluded such as "legacy support." For all any of us seems to
know, lynx might be considered "legacy" by Red Hat.

I'll modify the HOWTO to tell people to check this one. This
comes up too often.
