Hi, Well I think I asked this question some time back but never saw the message here and never got any kind of reply to it. So if yall already have seen this please forgive the repeat. I have a copy of dectalk 5 for linux. To be truthful it sounds horable. I payed for it and I was wondering if there was any way you all know of to get dectalk 4.63 believe it or not it is newer then 5.0 or if I have to pay for the program again just to get an earlyer version number. I like the idea of being able to use the clasic dectalk voice. This voice dates back to 4.2 cd of the dectalk pc fermware. This was the best vertion of this fermware. Thanks in advance. Oh one more note. What is all this about a new Ibm software synthasizer and will speech dispatcher work with it. To unpack and install the firmware you will need access to a dos box so you can update your firmware on your express. If you have a dectalk pc then you will need to get the firmware for linux. You have unpacked this in a strict dos environment? As I said, i am using dos, but when unpacked here, the files look like some do with uninstalled windows ones, partial file names etc. Granted I may have gotten a bad copy, but it is not my lack of dos access. The windows machine with window eyes is frankly holding up the power strip to my third now a mac computer, I have never found anything i needed to do that was worth dealing with the flaws of windows. Sorry I have been not been of help to you so far. First witch hardware device do you have. If you have the express you may not need to update your firmware at all. The express will speak the firmware version when you turn it on. If it is 4.2b or latter no need to update it to work with speakup. If you are using the dectalk pc you will need to get the Linux modgels for it. To install the dectalk express firmware you will need access to a dos based computer or one able to run a dos box. There is no way I know of to update the firmware using Linux. Unpack the zip file for the firmware of the express you want to use pkunzip will do this if you are having problems using the self extracting file. Then run the install program. View the readme file for instruction on updating your express. Jim, As I have said already, I am running dos, not Linux, and as i have said in giving the firmware i have been updating, i am using an express. What i did not say, as it has nothing to do with this list, is that my present dec-talk express is a replacement one i am trying to get to work with my DOS screen reader. so, i have been asking specifically about the firmware only as it is what i considered o point here, since others have posted in the past about obtaining the firmware and installing it. Before my previous express was damaged, i am guessing given the timing of its own upgrade, i was using the firmware dated from 2000, as it was that year when i made another change. my screen reader which is Arctic technology's business vision does not require the dec-talk drivers to run. However for some reason it is not interfacing well with the dec. this express dates back to 1995, but the person using it told me he had used it with Linux too, perhaps changing some of the internal settings, again why i want to reinstall the new firmware, if I can get a clear copy. I am perfectly skilled in installing the software, that is not the issue. The firmware i got from the gw micro site does not fully install nor does it behave during instalation as the readme files and users guide says it should, so i am going to try once more to get another copy. However if there was an alternative source for this firmware, i wanted to seek it out there. so as i said, my copy of the firmware from gw micro would only partially install, as in shift files in its compressed form to my drive after creating the directory. I do, however have the ability to make FreeDOS boot floppies as well as the ability to run dosbox or dosemu under Linux. Will any of these work to update my Express firmware?
