Hello Mohammed: Welcome to the list. I am not sure what you asked in
yourmessage. A lot of blind people use their computers just as well
or better than they could in Windows. Others can never quite get
themselves out of the feeling that they are missing something if they
switch. Whether it works for you will depend on well you like it.
The best thing you can do is try it and find out. If you determine
you don't like it as well you can always go back to using Windows.

dear kirk,
hello. in fact, I don't how to start using linux cause starting it would
mean that I'll have to buy a speech synth first. unless there are
disterbutions of linux that come with software synths.

There are currently no distributions with software speech. Maybe in
the future their may be but the difficulty of determining the users
sound card and loading the appropriate drivers has not been solved
yet.

Well, Kirk-and-All, while Speakup may not support softwae speech yet, we can
try Oralux which comes with some TTS engines as well as supporting the Fonix
dec-talk software

Hi,
Oralux does work..it worked on two of my thre "daily drivers" It may be
great to get started with Linux, then graduate to FC3 with
speakup. Booting from a CD is really cool, but the distro is more
limited. I am using both a Red Hat 9 and Oralux, till I get some comfort
using Linux.

Hi, I have asked this before I still do not understand why I have been told
it no longer should be used. I have a copy of IBM via voice out loud five
why can't I use it as a software synthesizer. It sounds better then the
other two I have tried. Thanks.

It's not that it can't be used. It's that it's no longer being
maintained, and it doesn't work on a lot of newer Linux systems.

I don't know. The only way to find out is to try it. From what I've
heard, though, it's mostly newer systems that have problems, so it may not
work. Give it a shot, anyway and see what happens.

Not unless you write a speech dispatcher module for it.

I doubt it. The last Debian release that has the correct versions of
glibc is Woody. I think Woody still uses glibc 2.2 while Sarge uses
glibc 2.3.
The problem with Viavoice not running on newer versions of Linux
distros is because the Viavoice package is a binary linked against a
version of a common library that isn't on newer systems.
If you decide to switch to Debian Woody, be aware it comes with Gnome
1.4. You will need to build Gnome from source or use packages that are
backports for Woody.
Hope this helps.
Kenny

Hi,
Yes, I tried to buy the software DECtalk package earlier this week. I was able to download the actual software. Their system said that the Serial Number/Licence would be emailed to me.
I have not at this moment (since Monday evening) received any email from them. I sent an email to their support address on Tuesday and still nothing. Except .... they billed my VISA twice for the amount due. I am currently pursuing this matter with VISA, since Fonix does not respond.
Beware!

That is one possibility, but the sound and speech come up very late in
the boot process, which is not what is wanted. There is also no way of
knowing whether a sound card is even detected, without not hearing
anything.

Like a good builder, you learn methods which will always work, your tools will
change. Your question is veg enough I'd say yes. Can you design in the same
fashion, I don't know.If you have to design flash content or heavy javascript
content, you may have difficult reading it depending on what tools you use.
