Is that because of his hardware or because of the dlinux distribution?

Gnome needs a fast machine. In contrast, I've got speakup under debian running
just fine with a pentium 90 using just the console.

Hi.
It's because of his hardware. Depending on the amount of ram in the
system, he can get Gnome up and running for sighted people, but the load
added by Gnopernicus and software speech would make the system too slow
to be used.
If he has 64 meg, Gnome will run slowly for sighted users, but it can be
used.

reformat this old windows machine 256 meg with 731 mhz maybe?

if you got more ram for the pII you could run gnome fine. my pII/233
with 208mb ram runs gnome with gnopernicus at a usable speed. as for
sited people I saw an old 486dx 66 with 28mb ram run gnome that was
usable by sited people.

It's because of his hardware. Depending on the amount of ram in the system,
he can get Gnome up and running for sighted people, but the load added by
Gnopernicus and software speech would make the system too slow to be used.
If he has 64 meg, Gnome will run slowly for sighted users, but it can be
used.

Use ? to get help from withinthe lynx browser.
Note: You may also want to turn on link and form-field numbering, which
would mean you could type in the number of a link you wanted to activate
using the number keys on the qwerty as opposed to arrowing to the
hyperlink. I find this feature invaluable, but some people don't like
it.
You can make these (and other config) choices your default in the O (for
options) menu.
In links (the chain), use the period to toggle link numbering.

Do you mean the config file for the kernel or the settings related to echo,
rate, voice etc. Your config for the kernel is already saved in /boot. You may
want to copy it somewhere else and if you ever compile a new kernel you'll want
to use it as the baseline. You can save your speakup speech, rate and other
customizations in your shell source file, .bashrc for the bash shell. There
is also the speakupconf script, but I don't know if there is any other way of
getting it other then checking out the speakup source from cvs. For reference,
can we download just the speakupconf script from somewhere?

You could try epic4 which is a derivitive of ircii with more features. I
think if you put "unset status_clock" in your .ircrc file you can get
rid of the repeating time. If that doesn't work try "set -status_clock".
You can of course prefix both of those commands with / to use them
interactively in ircii.
Also about your email you can use mutt which works wonderfully with some
configuration, and configuration is the main thing I like about it. You
can set up everything just to your liking in mutt. The learning curve
for pine isn't as steep, but I just don't like it as much. Good luck

Yeah LOL that's more of that configurability I was talking about. All
the control is had from / prefixed commands. You can set up key
bindings, but I have never found it very helpful to do so. You might get
the epic4-scripts package and use some of the scripts it provides to
help make the commands simpler.
