Hi speakup,
I have just installed Fedora core 1.0 using the speakup enabled
boot-orig.iso disc. The installation went well, i can even boot from
the hard drive now, but unfortunately it seems it boots into a
graphical mode and i can't get a text console to start my Speakup,
if such a beast exists on my hard drive at the moment.
I'm at a loss as to what to do and so i ask the fedora users out
there for any assistance.
TIA

To: Krister Ekstrom, Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
What you need to do is change the default runlevel the system boots into,
and all should be fine.

To: Erik Heil, Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
Yes, this advice is correct, but executing it isn't quite straight
forward, regretably.
The problem is something called First Boot which doesn't follow the
standard GUI convention on Linux which lets you go to a text console by
pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 (or Ctrl-Alt-F2, etc.).
So, you need to boot first into single user mode from whence you can:
chkconfig --level 0123456 firstboot off
At that point, you may start in a graphical logon screen, but you'll be
able to Ctrl-Alt-F1 to go to a text console logon screen.
To go to single user mode:
1.) If using grub do 'a s' during the grub screen.
PS: You've probably not made grub accessible, so this may be a bit
hit and miss.
2.) If using lilo do:
[default.kernel.name] s

If one boots into a textual login and then needs to startup gnome. What
is the command for this?
Thanks,

I always did gdm then entered my username then enter then my password
then enter. that's probably not the best way however.

Thank you. I was familiar with the startx command, but wanted to make
sure that I was using the command that would load gnome whether it was
the default or not. It is my understanding that startx can also load
KDE, is this correct?
Thanks,
Sina

You could try creating a .xinitrc file in your home directory. (Note the
dot in .xinitrc) In the .xinitrc file put
exec gnome-session
Save it and then type
startx
You should end in a gnome session. Remember that you will switch
consoles as X starts so you might get a lot of talking from your synth
as you switch. If you want to look at the errors that happen during
your session, use ctl-alt-function key to get back to the console where
you ran the startx command. When you end the Gnome session, you will be
returned to the console where you typed the startx command.
Personally, I find it easier to let gdm start and log in using it
instead of starting Gnome from a text console.

See my earlier message. If you create the .xinitrc file, you will make
certain that Gnome starts for your user.
