Hi all. I read on another list back when it still existed, that one could
install mobile accessibility onto their phone themself.Does anyone know if
this is still possible? From what I've read recently, it seems that you
have to mail your phone to a distributor and have them install it for you.
I want to avoid this if at all possible, because of the longer turn around
time it would involve. Does anyone know if it is still possible to install
moile accessibbility yourself? Thanks.

marketers of TALX.

PS: If anyone buys either Mobile Accessibility or TALX, please file a
complaint with the FCC for a Section 255 violation on the part of your
phone company and Nokia. See http://www.afb.org/section255.asp.

Why? Because, by U.S. law, you shouldn't have to pay a single dime for
telephone accessibility.

I did check out the Maxi Aids site and was shocked at the price for this 
damned accessible program. Of course it seems only to be for certain 
phones. I wouldn't consider spending $249 for software that the flippin' 
phone manufacturer should install if nothing else upon request or have 
the provider of the service do it. Hell you can download ring tones and 
crap to the phone so the software should be easily downoaded when you 
get the contract and should be paid for by the provide. My thoughts only 
of course.
Paying a little something is more reasonable than $249 for 
sure...geez!!!

Talx is worse.  ABout $400 I think.  Which is ridiculous.  Something like
that I have no problem with making an ISO image and uploading it to my FTP
server.  I mean the nokia 9290 Communicator is enough in itself
prohibitively expensive, about $500 or more.  plus it doesn't support 3G for
Internet access, it simply dials up your iSP and uses an 14.4kbps
connection.  Unless this has been upgraded, i'd say that's not good.

Your U.S. Congress agrees with you. You shouldn't have to pay extra.
That's why Section 255 was put in the 1996 Telecommunications Act.

But, just because it's the law doesn't mean it's going to happen that
way. It's absolutely essential for people to file Section 255 complaints
with the FCC. 

I have seen a lot of complaining on the email lists over the years about
how telephone companies are doing blind people wrong. The complaining is
right for the most part. But complaining on the lists isn't going to
change anything. COnly complaints to the FCC have a chance to make
things change. And, AFB is poised to help, but there's only so much we
can do without those complaints to the FCC.

And on that note I plan to file a complaint against Verizon Wireless and 
LG Electronics. Matter of fact have you heard any updates on the case of 
Bonnie O'Day and Verizon Wireless?
Ay folks lets all file complaints and encourage any else to do so. I 
suspect that although ACB and other organizations get Congress's 
attention, some individuals would only help build the fire up under 
their collective behinds.

They are two competing products that provide a TTS output capibility for
the telephone features of a Symbian wireless telephone, usually the
Nokia 3650 in the U.S.

Obviously, even so so functionality can be a critical functionality
enhancement.

I have not used TALX, though I've seen it demonstrated on a Nokia 9210
(or some such PDA Nokia).

I do have Mobile Accessibility on an AT&T serviced Nokia 3650. It
takes forever to boot--with no early indication that it's even booting.
It crashes a lot sometimes so hard that I need to remove the battery to
get a reset. It's a stand-alone application on top of the Symbian on the
phone. In other words, it does not enable the apps on the Nokia, but
installs a separate app.

The 3650's dial pad is stupid fro a blind person's perspective. It's a
horseshoe shaped reminiscence of old dial pads. Not easy to use.

Talx, or Talks as it's now called, is a screen reader for mobile
phones running the Symbian operating system. An example of such a
phone is the Nokia 9290, as it's called in the states. Mobile
Accessibility is a program that provides speech to a cellphone too,
the difference is that MA is a program that sorta takes over the phone
and makes its own menus, that is, it doesn't use the phones regular
menu system like Talks does. MA also runs on Symbian phones.
My opinion is that Talks is the better alternative since it gives you
access to the whole phone, not to just some of the functions, but
that's just my opinion.
Talks is currently available for the Nokia 92XX series and as a beta
for the 3650 and 7650 Nokia phones. I think that MA is available for
the 3650 and 7650 and they claim that they have it available for more
phones.
