Hi all. How do I go about determining the ip of the gateway my box is
using? I tried using ifconfig but it doesn't seem to say what it is.

You want to use route.

The line you're looking for starts with "default", and that should be
the last line of output from route.
The ip address right after "default" should be the address of your
gateway.

The last line of output when I type route is:
default         cdnt01-a-rtr.ve 0.0.0.0         UG    0      0        0
eth0
However I did find another line, which seems to contain the ip:
68.37.216.0     *               255.255.252.0   U     0      0        0
eth0
I believe that 68.37.216.0 is the correct ip in this case?

cdnt01-a-rtr.ve seems to be the name of your gateway. It also seems
that the full name didn't fit in route's output. If you've got an idea
of what the full name is, then you want to see which ip address it
resolves to.

Can't help you with the ip address you provided. Ultimately, you are
the person who would know what your gateway is. My guess is from
looking at the output I get from route, that the ip you provided is
the ip that gets assigned to you, not the ip of the gateway.

I would only caution that usually a 0 at the end of an IP address is
rather strange or odd. I have never seen that be assigned, as most
people use that as a special address for casts or whatever it may be.

I'm pretty sure that the .0 IP is the network address in this
case--especially seeing it being followed by the netmask.

If you have a static IP and your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, it is
pretty likely that the gateway starts with .1 with the first 3 octets
being the same.  For example, if my IP is 192.168.1.23, there's a good
chance that the gateway is 192.168.1.1.
