Oh lovely, any idea how I go about that?  Why isn't anything straight
forward?

Yes, cdrecord is only for scsi devices. Having said that, if you have an
ide drive, you will need to have ide-scsi emulation support in your
kernel, so that your ide drive will be emulated as a scsi drive for use
with cdrecord.
