Hello,
I can't specifically help you with audio description, but you could see if
MPlayer supports it. It does have support for subtitles and might support
USB devices, but I have no idea.
Regarding the subtitles themselves, I can tell you that the BBC subtitles
are in plain text. If you have Get_IPlayer, you can give it the --subtitles
option to get them in the .srt format which is justa text file with numbers
indicating the time position for the dialog. They are interesting to read
and could be useful if you for some reason can't get the audio. Since they
are already in plain text and you download them separately, there is no need
to convert them. Again, MPlayer should be able to display them in real-time.

Just wondering how you got on with any of this stuff. I've just moved to
the UK and am very interested in DTV reception (there's no DAB here on
Skye).
Are subtitles not sent as text?
Geoff.

They can be burned into the video, in which instance there's no way to
get at them..
However, the more modern approach is to send as text, and in such
situations you should be able to get at them, e.g. under mplayer v is
the toggle to view subtitles. Further controls are explained in man for
mplayer.
Note that mplayer supports exporting subtitles into files. And, I
suppose for completeness I should point out that HTML 5.0 supports
sending captions and/or subtitles in separate files intended for
combination with the media resource on the fly.

You should look at get_iplayer. It downloads BBC shows with subtitles and
audio description. It used to have ITV and Channel 4 support, but no more.

Yes, they are in the.srt format which is mostly plain text.

Surely this is on topic.

I know about get_iplayer. I'm actually interested in reception of live TV
and radio. I figure this could avoid some of the accessibility issues
with hardware set-top boxes, plus I'd just like to do it. And there'd
also be the possibility of recording things to listen to later.
There would seem to be two issues:
1. Find compatible hardware. This should be easy enough.
2. For playing audio description, finding a way of mixing the main
program audio with the description stream.
Geoff.
