I'm using squeeze and makeinfo not only appears to not be on the hard 
drive, it apparently is also missing from the files available to download.  
Has the makeinfo command been replaced and if so what command takes its 
place?

/usr/bin/makeinfo is on my Squeeze system and is in the texinfo package.
