Hi Folks,

In order to activate my new I-Phone, I will need to get and install
I-Tunes. I am writing to find out whether or not it will work in LInux, or
is there some sort of Linux-based alternative to I-Tunes. Then too, I
wouldn't mind purchasing music through I-Tunes, since it seems to be a
lagitimate seller of music and other things. Your thoughts, suggestions
and ideas, as usual would be most highly appreciated. From where did you
get your version of I-Tunes, assuming you use it.

any particular reason why you do not just use the activation process for the
phone, i-tunes included, at the store where you are getting the phone?

As a matter of fact, there is. I am not getting the phone from a store; I
am having it fedexed to me. Getting to a store some thirty-od miles a way
is a bit of a challenge. However, it very well may be worth it.

How to Install I-Tunes on Ubuntu:

Linux-based alternatives to I-Tunes:

For online purchase of music, you might check out RealPlayer.

Caveat: I haven't tested any of these and don't know how accessible they are.

Best regards,

Paul

I wouldn't use any of these alternatives for iPhone activation since
there are provisions in iTunes license which make it possible for Apple
to cancel your iTunes access if this is done.

I see, if you opted for this, I take it you have
1, examined one in person, are sure you can use it, and already studied
the gestures required to run your iphone?
2, know how voiceover interacts with it, including sound turn on and turn
off?
3, already know how your provider limits or expands on these options, what
apps do or do not come installed etc.?
4, ifnone of the above, you are on a list like the macvision one where you
can discuss all of it with people who have been using the i-phone for some
time?

I've been listening to podcasts, and it will take practice. I need to
learn what the ausies call the "flick." You can use different finger
combinations such as one, two and three finger rotations, flicks and other
moves. It will defenately require practice though.

Hi,

I've not had to deal with iPhones specifically, but we have an iPod Touch
4 here that we've had for a couple of weeks.

Regarding activation, if you mean activating Voiceover, if you have access
to a person who can see then you can activate it on the phone itself
without needing iTunes.

I don't know of a way to download apps, purchase music from the iTunes
Store or upgrade the device firmware under Linux, though I admit I've not
looked into it much either. You can purchase apps and (probably) music
directly on the iPhone itself, but again I'm not aware of a way of
upgrading to a newer version of iOS without using iTunes.

Geoff.

those are called gestures, and if on the right lists, you would already
have access to them.
too late now of course lol.

Actually, I think these terms are the official Apple terms which they use
in their documentation.

There is a practice mode in Voiceover. The problem is that you need to
know how to do several things before you can actually get to it
independently.

Actually it isn't too late, because the phone won't arrive until tomorrow

There is a piece of software called ideviceactivate which works
fine and is easy to use. Once you've activated your Iphone,
you'll have access to Itunes and can buy your music, provided
that you have wifi access to Internet.

Use your favourite search engine to look up ideviceactivate.

Bertil
