Recording Streaming Audio?

Hi All:  For some time we've been looking for a way to easily record either a 
live stream or .ram files?  Back in 2004 I had a script called grabit, but no1 
seems to have it  any more.  When I did a search, I found a pearl script called 
"pac"  it will convert files useing lame, but won't really rip streams.  Next, 
we found vsound "v sound" Sometimes it works, but most of the time it complains 
about not finding an .au file, or that I am trying to record off the internet.
I am useing speakup--and a dec-talk-usb  with an Audigy Usb sound card  with 
fc4.
O, I tried stream ripper, but it doesn't seem to handle playlist types such as 
.ram.  I think it wants an exact url of the stream.  I prefer saving the .ram 
or .pls in lynx  and then ripping with tr player.  Nice thing about tr player 
are the keyboard commands which tell me length and author/title.
Other than suggesting urls to get any tools, if any of you want to, please send 
directly packages or scripts, with install instructions, it would be wonderful.

One problem (unless I've missed something) with all the methods described so
far is that none of them lets you listen while you record. My personal
preference is to use vsound, which lets you run your favourite tool to listen,
and also records whatever is sent to the sound device as it's passing through.

Ok, Dave-and-All:  Yes, vsound lets you listen while recording, but as I said 
in my orriginal message, many times I cannot find a recorded file of any type 
which is saved.  It always says, "about to start the application"I suppose it 
would be nice if it would mention the name of the file it is saving.  We have 
an alias with some options, but after the stream finishes, it says cannot find 
then it lists a numbered au file.
Yes, I wish I could always use tr player as I record.

Hi,

Well, if you want to record and listen at the same time and you have a 
relatively modern soundcard, and you are happy to record to wave or to 
compress to something else on the fly, then you can simply capture your 
wave device and record as you play. But it'll also record other stuff your 
computer might play, and it'll also record any break-up you might 
experience.

Personally, I never got vsound to work.

I did need to make a small change to the script, but it's been so long that I
don't remember what, exactly, it was. I can send my copy of the "fixed" script
to whoever would like it, though.

See -ao pcm option in mplayer; default is audiodump.wav but you can also 
give a file name to the output wav.

No longer required since realplayer exists as a .deb package as well as 
mplayer on the ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ repository.
In that case you add -playlist as option to be able to stream / and/or 
save.
As said din a prevouis msg, I forgot the command I used to convert 
ra/ram while listening to it.

Hi, I think you can listen as you record with the wget method.  It's 
just an mp3 file so should play with any mp3 player.  You're right 
about mimms though.  I don't use Mplayer but it seems like it might 
play to a sound card as it records.  Unfortunately you can't stream 
wave files because apparently it needs to read the end of the file or 
something.

What you probably don't want to do is to just record and open a second copy 
of the stream to listen to. I heard that is a good way to get banned.

That is correct.  Fortunately, that's not what I was suggesting.  You 
listen to the mp3 file you're downloading with wget.  Jump to about 
the last 30 seconds and listen away.  Technically it's a broken file 
since it's still being downloaded live but I've done that with Winamp 
and it works.  As far as Linux players, I'm not sure but you could 
just keep restarting the downloaded file and go to the end every time 
if it doesn't support streaming.

Since you're writing the form, is there an option to order it for more
than just x86?  I have x86, PowerPC, and ADM64 within easy reach of my
chair, and the stuff I am playing with is intended for XScale.

uh.  I'm not sure, I'll have to ask.  I think the licenses we have are only 
for x86, but I'll check.  specifying platform was not part of my brief, so 
either that's an oversight or we're only selling for x86.

Ever end up getting banned because of wget not being the best user agent 
around? I heard 2 others that are not liked are freeamp and Jet Audio. I 
think banning on either user agent or having only 2 connections open is bad 
because the agent name can probably be changed to winamp or media player and 
people do use routers. These days one almost needs a router smart enough to 
take a stream and feed it 2 places rather than opening out a second 
connection that is thought usually to be a recorder.

I use mplayer. When I want to record a stream, I issue the command

mplayer -playlist <urlfile> -ao pcm:file=<outputfile>.wav -vc dummy -vo 
null

urlfile is the text file which contains the url.

This will record to uncompressed wav format, ok if you have the space.

As Tony says, wget should work for any HTTP streams (ogg, mp3, aac).

I've used mplayer to rip WMA streams in its native format.  It's awhile 
since I did it, but it was something like this:

mplayer -dumpstream -dumpfile <outputfilename> <url>

Note that the filename "stream.dump" will be used if the -dumpfile option 
is not given.

I've used this with WMA streams, no idea what else it does and doesn't work 
with. Also I've noticed problems seeking around the resulting file, but if 
you set it playing and leave it, it works just fine.

BTW: Why use "-vc dummy" instead of "-vc null"?  Just curious.

Quite true. However, you can write a script to take care of the 
conversion. Have a look at

Note that the mplayer command suggested there has to be changed slightly 
with regard to specifying the output file.

Good question. I got that idea from the above webpage. It probably doesn't 
matter.

Hi.  I can't help you with Real files such as .rm, .ram, etc but I 
can help with mp3 streams.  You can record many of them if you have 
wget installed.  This isn't foolproof but works great for ACB Radio 
and others I've tested.  For mms streams such as Windows Media 
Player, I suggest mimms.  I'm on Debian which has a package but I 
don't know about other distros.

For wget, you would do something like this.  My syntax might be off 
but it gives you the idea.  Yes, you can have it read the pls file 
directly as long as it only contains an http url.  If it has the 
usual Winamp header, wget will complain.

wget -itest.pls -Ofile.mp3

wget http://acbradio.org:6246/ -Omainstream.mp3

I think the -O switch should be upper case but I might be

I had a shell account around with a fair amount of space once, and I put 
this in a cron script using a symbolic link for wget named acb or acbradio, 
so at the right time, I could say "killall acbradio." My problem was that 
using it on Interactive, I'd get 2 hours of backup loop week after week 
after week. Maybe in their infancy, if you joined the stream and a backup 
stream came in, it wouldn't go away when the broadcaster started unless you 
refreshed the client. They could be using winamp magic in that thing too to 
make that happen that wget just won't deal with.

Hi.  Well, I don't know about that.  I couldn't get Interactive to 
work right with wget.  I had to install something else for mp3 
streams but I'm not rememberig the name now.  I only got it to 
reliably work for Mainstream.

Hi,

I have two more comments on recording streams under Linux.  First, 
the package I was thinking of is streamripper.  You can get it at:

http://streamripper.sf.net/

I know there are Debian and FreeBSD packages for it so it should run 
on other distros.  It only does mp3 files.  I think it can handle 
.pls files directly since it claims compatibility with Shoutcast 
servers.  I've used it to record ACB Radio Interactive with some success.

The other comment is about .wma and .asf streams.  I don't know 
anything about Mplayer and don't use it.  However, I've found that 
mimms works best.  It is also in Debian and you could try 
mimms.sf.net but I'm not sure if that's right.  It records streams 
and makes them seekable, or at least those I've heard are.  It 
doesn't handle meta files directly but you could probably do:

mimms `cat file.asx`

That is untested though.  It is designed for mms urls.  If anyone 
knows a way to get RealMedia, I'm interested.
