Hello,
I have registered with bookshare.org and am waiting for them to verify my
blindness with NLS. Meanwhile, I've been exploring the site. Public domain
books can be downloaded and unzipped using the DOS pkunzip program under
dosemu. I tried to download the unpack tool so I could test it. However,
Lynx just flashes something too fast to read (I am using BRLTTY.) When I
looked at the source html, I found that the download for the unpack tool
was in a form instead of being a simple link. Even commercial Web sites
don't put links to stuff that can be downloaded in a form.
The public domain books which I have downloaded are excellent. However,
they have to do a lot of work on their Web site, and they have to support
Linux as well as Windows and Macs. If the unpack tool would run under
dosemu that would be ok, but I can't even download the unpack tool!
Meanwhile, I'm certainly not going to pay them anything until they make
their stuff accessible for me.
John

Hi:
I've gotten to know a lady at bookshare.org, and she's accepted me as a person
who can give them feedback which they'll pay attention to regarding Linux. I'll
chase the issue of downloading the unpack tool.

FYI: ... then you should be able to unzip them directly from native Linux as
well with the "unzip" command.

Nicolas,
Thanks. That worked. I was trying to use gunzip.

Bookshare.org has another problem. A few weeks ago Lynx would work nicely
on the demo page. Now it will not go past screen 3 whenyou press the space
bar. Moreover, something on screen 2 causes the Grade 2 translator in
BRLTTY to freeze. You have to kill BRLTTY as root. With the translator off
it works.

This doesn't happen here. I can get all the way to screen 11 just by pressing
the space bar 10 times.

John and Dave,
I emailed Alison last night to let her know about the download problems.
I suspect that it is similar to the problems we were having signing up,
although I have no idea what could have been going on. They seem to have
fixed the sign-up form, though.
The unpack tool that they have for downloads is a gui application and will
not run under dosemu. Someone is apparently working on porting the tool
to Linux.

I had the impression that the unpack tool will work only in Windows, so i
haven't spent my money on bookshare.
And I'm also not sure you are allowed to even download the unpack tool until you
are authorized as blind.
