This is a lack of interest? I'd say that you've got some interest, despite the fact that you've had a couple of very significant rewrites of the program, so significant were these rewrites that the whole concept of how the program worked/interacted with the operating system was changed, and was in the process of changing a third time, as I recall from your most recent Emails on the project. I don't know what other help you'd want, apart from people testing it out and saying, "Oh, it's broken", or "Oh, it works great". If something was broken, how much feedback could be given on a fix for whatever was broken without the source? As far as working on things that you yourself don't like to do, did you get any help from anyone on them, or even ask for any? (Documentation, for instance) Just some thoughts. ... If you want to discontinue your work, you're certainly entitled, but it certainly sounds to me as though your bowing out is at least premature. Of course, if you're really not interested in it anymore, that's something other--that's why we're all ding this stuff, after all, but why not just say you're not interested in doing it? Course, if you are interested and don't want any help, who's to stop you? I am not here to be critical of anyone's source code - I merely want to work on a console-based screen reader and rather than everyone starting their own project and no one really finishing anything some folks could work together and have a pretty col product! Ok, so if you are getting rid of svlpro than allow me to download any source and documentation you have in any form, so that maybe, it can live on in some form... You might contact him on the screen reader he's working on; I *think* he's GPL'ing it. Course, you might also check out Speakup, which of course works as kernel patches, and it is definitely GPL. I don't have Michael's Email address to hand, although I think it's mgorse@wpi.edu ... This is a DOS program intended to run within dosemu that mimic in dosemu aka DOS all Linux native virtual consoles. This would allow, for example, one to pick up the free JAWS for DOS version and run it along with dosgate, thus having JAWS for DOS (or any other good old DOS screen reader) manage the Linux console. dosgate was originally written because somebody wanted to use his old Alva ABT240 under Linux but there isn't any documentation available for it that would have led to a BRLTTY driver. Instead, dosgate allowed for the DOS TSR for the ABT240 to run under dosemu and dosgate just duplicate screen content and keypresses between the DOS envirenment and Linux virtual consoles transparently. That's something I wanted to play with for a long time, but... didn't come to it yet. Since it should work with screen readers too, maybe this is a good alternative too. The synthesizer question depends on the screen reader package you want to use. dosgate is available from http://www.cs.unibo.it/~zinie/dosgate/ On Sat, 18 Dec 1999, Simon F wrote: > where can I download a copy of this dosgate? and does it need a synthasizer > or does the dos screen reader handle that side of things? > > simon. At 16:41 17/12/99 -0500, you wrote: > >Just an idea for someone with time to experiment: > > > >There is a package named "dosgate" available for few months already that > >was announced on this list. Currently it probably won't work well if you're using something other than a Speak-out or DEC-talk PC (it tries to support the DoubleTalk but reportedly doesn't work well with it). I should have some time to work on it over Christmas; I'd like to at least get it to work with Emacspeak servers, and hopefully get it to work better with the DEC-talk Express (currently has problems with the DTExp losing data, and I don't know how to handshake with it). I might eventually put yasr under the artistic license but haven't got around to figuring out how I'm going to license it yet. Either way, the source is available; currently it's all I have on my page. --Michael Gorse, WPI Cs '01 / ICQ:22583968 / http://www.wpi.edu/~mgorse/ -- What is the name of the highest mountain in the Philippines?
