Hi listers,
Is anyone here using a NetGear WG614 wireless router? If so, can you
give me some advice on configuration?
The router uses a good deal of javascript in its web-based UI.
I managed to partially configure it, so that it provides wireless access
to my cable connection. I can't seem to be able to add firewall rules and
such, because of the heavy use of Javascript.
Any help is appreciated.

Well, you could try compiling ELinks with Spidermonkey-based Javascript
support, and see if the interface is usable then.

I use edbrowse, which uses the Spidermonkey libraries as well.
No luck there.
Just for grins, I tried elinks as well, with the same result.
What I'd like to find is some extensive documentation of the internals of
the WG614. Then, I could write some scripts which would let me configure
it from the command-line. But I doubt I'll find that sort of documentation.

The problem is more general IMHO: there are not enough routers who
accept the usage of browsers like elinks or links2 or w3m:
still will have problems with 401 Authentication failed or at the end
(w3m) of a config, when you must Save Ignore Cancel
A good goal should be to start a project:
a) as you said to find how to do routers conf with scripts, but
therefore you ened manufacturer's infos,
b) or we need a site (like linuxprinting.org) around accessible routers
(it seems the Linksys WRT54GL with the "L" of Linux, whould be
accessible for blind)
c) or, we need some manufacturer to build blindfriendly routers,
Cisco-based or so

Not necessarily. Another option is to communicate with the router using
a "mainstream" browser, and monitor the back-and-forth HTTP traffic. I.E.,
reverse-engineer the config scripts. Of course, having detailed documentation
is best.
As for Dr. Raman's batbox suggestion, I wish I had bought a Linksys.

Or we need to continue to work on a text based browser that works with
javascript which would make many more webpages available and usable via a
text browser.

Probably not, but go check at openwrt.org whether this netgear is
supported by openwrt. Maybe you'll get lucky. Or, maybe you'll just
decide to drop $60 USD on a wap/router that can run openwrt and deliver
100% accessibility.

Hi Janina,
Great suggestion.
While the WGR614 isn't supported by openwrt, their wiki has a link
to this site: http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/NetgearWGR614
It turns out that this router provides a telnet console, but the console
has to be unlocked by sending an encrypted packet to the router! Netgear
provides a Windows program to do this. Of course, there's no Linux version yet.
An open-source version is in development.
The above comments apply to v5, v6, and v7 versions of this router. I have a v7.
So that is the accessibility status of the WGR614.

for my linksys router, I use something called
batbox -- it basically downloads itself into the router and then
enables you to telnet to the router and get shell level
access. At that point you can run iptables and other regular
shell tools to do what you want.
