Hello:
I am a new user of the Linux OS.
Or I'm attempting to be a new linux user I should say.
So far I have had a professor assist me in setting up a dual boot with Linux slackware 9.0 on my DELL inspiron 1109.
We have attempted to set up emacspeak with the viavoice for unix software solution with no success.
I then thought I would be able to use my Braille note as an external synthesizer. Unfortunately it is impossible to connect the legacy free lap top with the legacy full Braille note.
I was hoping to find a software application similar to eliquence for windows. One that needs no external synthasizer. Is anyone familiar with software of this nature?
If anyone has any advice for me, or possible solutions I would really appreciate the assistance.
Has anyone used Eloquence for Unix? Would that be worth trying? I;m not even sure from the documentation that eliquence for unix is a screan reading application.
Thanks,
Patricia

Hi there,
I am also pretty new at this. I have been using Oralux. This is a version of Linux for the visually impaired and comes with emacs speak and two software voice synths. Although personaly i find them a little tricky to understand. Although the Dec talk software can be used. This costs fifty dollars. Oralux needs to be run on a FAT partition. Although it does run from the CD, it can save data and personal settings to a hard drive.
For more info, see,

I don't know if a USB-to-serial-port dongle (should be able to find them
for under $20 US) will do the trick. It might not let you catch things
from bootup, but once the USB drivers load, you might be able to use that.
Unfortunatly, you'd then be lugging around an Insprion, a Braille-note,
and a dongle. Gonna need your own pet camel or pack-horse if it gets any
worse (grins)

There are several projects that you can look into--while there's been work
to get speakup working without a hardware synth, it's still in the nacent
stages and seems to involve a long number of steps that rebuild your
kernel and other goodies. There are at least two other projects though of
which I've heard:
Yasr: (yet another screen reader) found at http://yasr.sourceforge.net/
Screader: www.euronet.nl/~acj/eng-screader.html
Both of which are supposed to work with the software synths available.
With these two, you do forfeit speakup's kernel integration, allowing you
to have speech from bootup, but they should work with all your favorite
console apps.
Additionally, for the GUI, there's the gnopernicus project
http://www.baum.ro/gnopernicus.html
which brings accessibility to the X environment. It's my aim to try out
at least Yasr and Screader shortly, but I've just lacked the time to
monkey with them. I don't know how far along Gnopernicus is, but my
understanding is that it's coming along with time.
You'll need a software synth (like MBROLA, Festival, Flite, or IBM's
ViaVoice) to actually do the TTS for these products, but at least the
first three are freely available. I've heard conflicting bits on
ViaVoice, so you'd have to investigate that one further.
Hope this helps,
-tim

Hi. Viavoice doesn't work on modern Linux distros. Your Slackware
version is one.
Your software synth options are eflite, DEQTalk software, and others I
forget ow. I'm not a Slackware user, but I believe you will need to
build eflite and flite locally. The DEQTalk software synth is $50 from
fonix. You can get it att
http://www.fonix.com/products/dectalk/rt_linux/
Both eflite and DECQTalk will work with emacspeak.
You might try using a PCMCIA serial adapter to connect your external
symth.
Hope this helps.

If the linux version starts out with a 9, it's likely going no viavoice
install will work. If you would like to try out viavoice, see if you can
get some help installing slackware 8.1 rather than your current version.

hello:
I recently set up my computer to use oralux as a Linux emulator. I am
having trouble with the sound hanging once in a while. It seams to be very
random in the times it will just quit talking. The program itself does not
hang, a sighted person could still work with it.
Is anyone else having this problem?
If so, is there a way to turn the sound back on without rebooting the
computer.
thanks
Patricia

Hello,
Do you use the CD with Flite, Festival, DECtalk ?
Generally to restart a speech server under Emacspeak:
C-e C-s
A person reported that with Oralux 0.05, Emacspeak +
Eflite + Flite hang frequently.
Honestly, I didn't have time to investigate.
What I observed: I had to kill the remaining eflite
processes, and restart the speech server so that
Emacspeak talks again.
Regards,
Gilles

Does Oralux 0.05 use a new glibc? At some point (possibly in 2.3.2, but I
can't remember), glibc switched to a new pthread library which doesn't
work well with released versions of eflite and may cause lock-ups, but I
have reorganized the thread code and believe I have fixed it in cvs.

Oralux 0.05 uses glibc 2.3.2 (eflite 0.3.7 and flite 1.2).
Thanks for the tip,
Gilles
