Hello,
One can install shrike using a floppy to start.
The standard ones is on the first cd under the
images directory.
This would not help that much as they do not supply a
floppy image with speakup compiled into the kernel.
The last time i looked, I could not find a speakup enabled install disk
for shrike on the speakup site.

I've gotten 2 different people to look at my bios to figure out how to get the computer to search the cdrom for a boot sector. For some odd reason, it doesn't work. And this Shrike no longer supports the boot floppy function.

I know I've asked on this list for a lot,and haven't contributed much, but
I'm wondering if it's possable for someone to make an iso of knopix with
gnopernicus precompiled into it. I want to try the system, but don't want
the headache of setting up a whole linux system.
It seems to me if this could be done, people who want the ease of a
jaws-like install would finally have it (i.e. put in the disk and get
software speech. If it could also have speakup, more power to it.)
Here's dreaming, and if someone out there knows enough about isos to make
this happen, thanks in advance.

Hi: Do you have another system which can work for you as your speech or
Braille enabled box? If yes, you can redirect the whole installation of
any linux distro (at least I did that with debian and redhat) to this
terminal box, at boot prompt you need to put:
linux text console=ttySX,9600,n81
where X is a tty device you are using to communicate with your terminal.
In regards to brltty enabled debian installation disks, there is a
detailed instruction how to do it in /brltty-XXX/Bootdisk/README.DEBIAN.
It might be not that clear at first, I had to try several times, but I
finally succeeded to build the set of floppies for my alva abt340.
Hope it helps,
Pawel.

You know what?
I had totally forgotten about that option.
Thanks
I'll try it.

I wonder if that option will work equally well with Sun's Java Desktop.
For those that don't know, sun combined linux with gnome, star office open
office java including java sandbox for security and they claim the ability
for the operating system to run windows and mac software and a price tag
about 20% of their nearest microsoft competitor. I don't know how easy
it's supposed to be to get installed, but if it's reasonable this might be
something to check out. This is intended as a windows xp replacement.

In another thread (see below), Jude talked about Sun's version of
Linux. When I last looked at it (about a year ago), my boss swore up
and down it could be downloaded and installed on a PC. The site did
have all the separate pieces but no installation ISO's or procedure
for building them. One of our Unix gurus also looked at it and, within
the time he spent on it, didn't come up with anything either. From
what I read, they were targeting it to be included on their new Sun
machines (Intel-based I think) but, though flatly contradicted by the
salesman who did a spiel for my boss, they weren't prepared to make it
generally available.
Is it really available for download now? (Guess I ought to go look,
eh?)

Hello Lee,
I work for Sun Microsystems in the Linux group.
Currently, Sun is supporting Redhat Advanced Server and Solaris X86 on the
x86 machines.
You are referring to SunLinux, which is no longer supported.
thanks.

Hello, Martin:
I realize your message was posted some time ago--I'm just catching up on
mail ...
Two comments:
1.) Don't use Shrike. It's the beta that culminated in the release
of Fedora Core 1.0. So, use Fedora Core instead. A Speakup Modified
Fedora Core is at:
http://www.linux-speakup.org/ftp/disks/fedora/1
The installation HOWTO for Red Hat 9 is still accurate for Fedora Core:
http://www.linux-speakup.org/ftp/disks/redhat/HOWTO_INSTALL.html
Once installed, you need to switch consoles with Alt-F2, cd to
/mnt/syslinux, do a chroot . and finally
chkconfig --level 0123456 firstboot off
If you fail to do this, your system will boot, seemingly working, then
suddenly stop speaking. You won't be able to get out of it except by
cycling power. Firstboot doesn't respond to Ctrl-Alt-F1, in other words.
If you don't do this at the end of installation, you can do it by going
to single user mode and issuing the above chkconfig command.
2.) If your system won't boot from CD ROM, you might want to try
using telnet from a second machine which has speech. Obviously, both
machines would need to be on a network. To use telnet issue:
text dd telnet
at the boot> prompt after booting the target system. You can do this
from floppies, but will probably need sighted assistance for the first
few screens. Once you can telnet to the target machine, you'll have full
speech support.
