hi,
under debian i type:
apt-get install emacspeak-ss vm
on a newly installed base system. as expected thisinstalls emacspeak plus
the vm mail reader. however, in order to fulfill the requirements of
emacspeak it gets emacs19, and to fulfill those of vm it gets emacs20. how
can i just use one version of emacs and have all apps configured for this
version?
i am using debian 2.1 potato.

Install the latest version of Vm from Debian testing or unstable,
which should work well with Emacs 20; then delete Emacs 19. This is
basically what I did and it saved a lot of bisk space.

Saqib -
If you don't specify whether you want emacs19 or emacs20, then apt-get
will choose based on the "Depends" and "Conflicts" lines of the
packages it is installing. emacspeak-ss has a dependency that will be
satisfied by either emacs19 or emacs20. emacs19 happens to be listed
first. If you want emacs20 instead, then you can install it and
uninstall emacs19.
Use "apt-cache show emacspeak" to display information on the package.
