hi,
Are there any other project currently working on getting X-support for
braille/speech under linux apart form the Beam project?
Any idea's about how to procede to setup such a program?
Can brltty be used as part of such a driver-overlay?

There is an active Gnome accessibility project which aims to create
the necessary infrastructure to allow braille/speech access to the
Gnome desktop and applications. This includes extensions to GTK and
interface libraries for assistive technologies, as I understand the
project.

Yes, I've got that url from someone.
Seems like they want not only to extend gnome and the gtk/gtk+ liberies,
but they areworking on a general solution so that everything is clearly
defined and the programmer has to do next to nothing to get his program
accessable.
They even aim on complete keyboard-control.
There solution goes further and includes virually all possible
disabilities, from blind/lowvision to other things like having to use
speechrecognition etc.

This is correct, and it is because of our Sec.508 law here in the states.
Companies like Sun need to do this in order to compete for sales to the
U.S. Government. No access, no sale is the general rule here these days.
Isn't it sweet? Long live 508!

Jason is correct about the GNOME work. The uri for this project is:
http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gap
While this is active work, and while it is an exciting prospect, there's
nothing there to download and install just yet. When that day comes,
though, it will be free in keeping with the GNU approach to software.

Can Redhat be installed on an Apple Power book?
If so, what about speech?
