I'm contemplating writing an auditory line graph widget. This would
use time for one axis, frequency for the other and, optionally,
left-right position for multiple lines. I would try to write it as a
function I could call from the data analysis packages we use (IDL,
ferret etc).
Before I go about reinventing wheels, has anyone done this? Second
I'm using emacspeak with OutLoud. Nice combination but it's eaten my
audio device. I probably can't convince work to replace my stupid port
replicator with a real docking station and an SB-live so I thought I'd
use the PC-speaker for the first cut. There goes the stereo I fear.
Has anyone done simple FM synthesis through the PC speaker? Is there
an OSS driver for it? Am I better off trying to use something like
ESD to multiplex sound?
Any help greatly appreciated, if anyone else is crazy enough to need
something like this I'll happily inflict it on the world once I've
hacked something together. (provided someone else hasn't saved me the
trouble)
regards
Peter Rayner

See the following sound howto reference for the info on the PC speaker
driver. You might need to freshen it to a more recent kernel though.

T. V. Raman has apparently undertaken early work in this area. There is a
paper on the subject in his Publications directory. Currently it is
available only in Postscript, and is entitled "Converting Graphs to
Sound". For a full list of papers see

Don't know how does it work, but I found a kernel patch that should synthetize
audio through the speaker. Look at
http://linux-patches.rock-projects.com/v2.2-d/pcsp.html
Dealing with ESD surely it is interesting, but you should look at the OutLoud
OutPut, where it goes, if it opens directly the /dev/dsp, if it does, I think
you should hack almost all the kernel to let it work correctly.
Greetings, Massimiliano
P.S.:How does Emacspeak work? I found it quite unstable...
