For me personally, I joined with the idea that this was a list about Speakup specifically and that maybe every once in a while Linux or Linux access questions for the blind might come up from time to time. But honestly, I would not have joined if I knew floods of Mac OS X with other screen reader hand holding would hit my mailbox with no kibosh put on it. Now, I am certainly not telling anyone how I think the list should be run at all. I am just saying that I would have liked to know that ahead of time so I could have made a more informed decision about whether to sign up or not.
