Here is what apt-show-versions tells me about my mplayer package, 
mplayer-nogui:

mplayer-nogui/testing uptodate 1:1.0-pre6cvs20050409-0sarge0.1

Seems like the latest version is "testing" is 1.0-pre6 from CVS, from 
April 9.  I think I will just wait for 1.0-pre7 to arrive in "testing".
