List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: I use speakup on slackware, and it works just fine. In fact, slackware 8.1 has a speakup startup disk that ships with it by default. And, yes, the text-based install script is still there, and works just fine, I used it several times over the last couple years to install many machines.
