I think I can help you, I just need a little more detail. Can you not boot from the hard disk? Do you get any fs-type errors? Do you get a vfs kernel panic that it can't mount the root filesystem? Or does the system just hang at boot-time? If you had a distro such as Debian, FSCK would take care of most filesystem problems.
