Are you sure that speakup is crashing, or is it just not talking to your synth? sometimes a synth can get into a state where it's not communicating with speakup properly. If this happens, pressing insert-enter on the keypad should reinitialise the synth and get you speech back. If speakup is really dead then this is a serious bug and we want to know about it. for the record, speakup should be able to cope with speaking large volumes of text and most certainly shouldn't cause a crash of any sort.
