HI,
while I know some people don't like espeak, that sounds a bit extreme. Espeak has sound some data files in /usr/share/espeak-data that it uses when generating speech these include some voice profiles for languages and dialects, in /usr/share/espeak-data/voices. You might find that changing which of those your using may help some.
