He helped by building the kernel with many modulesstarting from the alsa within this 2.6.11 kernel. He built it using the support for the aureal vortex 8820 chipset, and the issues started. He asked me to try another sound card, and I inserted an sblive newer and also removed the vortex card. Booted and linux says that the sblive is detected as: emu10k1 with some caps although I can't remember where. Now, I need to know what to look for where sound modules are concerned and where. I am new but good with speakup's reading commands. If the phone helps, I can privately communicate with someone over the phone if necessary! sincerely Eric p.s. the install aside from kernel was done originally using the cd-rom as the kernel2.4.27-speakup that I found by way of the speakup page.
