Just my $0.02, unless things have changed recently, Speakup needs much 
better USB support. Speaking from the perspective of having a machine 
that doesn't have a serial port, and more and more machines are built 
that way now, USB is certainly the way to go. In the very near future, 
this will be entirely necessary, as motherboards with serial ports are 
becoming harder and harder to find, and most available plug-in serial 
ports are USB adapters.
