You may, of course, need to pipe this: amixer controls |more Once you know the device that controls your headphone volume level, you can querry it's current setting: amixer cget numid=X where X is the correct number which you leareed from 'amixer controls' . Now you can reset to a more appropriate level like this: amixer cset numid=X YY where YY is a volume setting you want to try.
