If the line isn't indented, you will hear 1. If the line starts with 1 space, you will hear 2. If the line starts with 2 spaces, you will hear 3 and so on. So, I guess a better description is that pressing numpad-8 twice fast will tell you the column number from the left at which the first character that isn't a space is found.
