Just wondering what version of Debian you are running? Stable uses gcc 2.95 and testing and unstable use gcc 3.3.On my unstable box I have libreadline4-dev. On my stable box I have Try installing libreadline4-dev. That's the version I have on my boxes. Hope this helps.
