Or at least start minicom with a modem in place to get it up and going but then unplug the modem and hook up the null modem cable or a cable with a null modem adaptor on it to the computer you are trying to install on. Oh, one other thing; be sure your baud rates match up. I'll bet most systems when booting from scratch would probably be going at 9600,n,8,1 and minicom would typically talk to a modem at 38400 or higher. Hope this helps.
