There are several ways depending on what tool you use.  Use the d
command in aptitude to see the dependencies.  If you use dselect, it
will tell you that a package can't be upgraded because of unmet
dependencies when you try to upgrade.
apt-cache depends package_name
will also show you the dependencies of a package.  Apt-cache isn't much
help because you will have to look at the version of each package to
figure out what is causing the problem.  Aptitude and dselect are more
user friendly for this.
