I patched speakup into the sys-kernel/vanilla-sources kernel which is
now up to 2.4.21 I believe. Basically what you do to install gentoo is
untar a gentoo stage tarball into an empty partition then follow there
install instructions. It is not necessary to have an actual gentoo cdrom to
install this. I suspect even a toms root disk would do. When you untar
the tar ball you chroot into the gentoo environment and do all of your
configuration inside the gentoo chroot.
