Hi.  don't judge the Linux desktop by our current access to it.  I
recently got gnome 1.4 working for my sighted girl friend.  She's used
Windows, but not anything else.  She had no problems with gnome and has
already started comparing it with Windows.  She can customize it more
than she ever could with windows.
