If keeping an email address is very important then switching isp's is not the best thing to do if everyone knows your email address. Some isp's will let you keep a mail only account so you don't have to pay them for dialup. The preferred way I feel though is to either own your own domain like I do with asmodean.net or by using an email alias such as pobox.com.
