I'm still trying to work out why I can't get speakup working with software speech as I want to put F12 on my notebook. But on my test machine having commenting out line 9 as advised on your website. I'm not getting any errors or speech. as I've run mkinitrd and included the ltlk speakup driver, the talkwith script appears to load things OK but I'm not getting any speech. Even though, I can play sound files nice and loudly. I wondered whether you considered republishing your previous howto's? I had to use google's cache to find them. The first boot stuff and other useful comments are still relevent.
