Well, if emacs seems to go bad on you, go to your Windows machine and open a telnet session to your Linux machine. Just because emacs isn't talking doesn't mean your machine is dead. If you're already logged in via telnet from Windows as whatever you use for your username, type: su - and provide the root password.
