I haven't patched a recent kernel with the latest version of Speakup so you'll want to follow the git instructions. As far as compiling the kernel after the Speakup patch has been applied go: make config or make menuconfig make bzImage Then copy System.map to /boot and edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and create a definition for your new image. This file has good examples for doing this. By limited I mean you can build as > modules or you can build in one synth. Work continues. If I am running debian lenny (unstable) what kernel should I get? And where would I get it from? Also when installing speakup what instructions do I follow? And do I need to do anything to grub?
