Do you have a SATA drive by any chance? My experience with my Dell
Dimension 8300 is that any 2.4.X kernel without SATA support will lock hard
when probing the hard drive. 2.6 seems to be a bit more robust, and just
can't find it if SATA isn't compiled in. Once you have a SATA kernel,
things work fine.
