Yes, I followed your instructions last year some time and fixed the
message file.
This problem is happening everywhere on this machine. I'll try it with
the laptop when I get a chance.

Did you replace your /boot/message as the installation HOWTO recommends?
If not, your synth is trying to pronounce the graphical splash screen.
