I am talking to the maintainer of the debian package for speakup to see if he is willing to update the kernel image and to provide a source package for speechd-up. If you are willing to work with source packages instead of just the debian ones let me know there is a good users guide and a howto on speakup and software synthesizers are covered in there. As a novus user my self I found it some what difficult to create the package only to find that the speakup image does not have the device in it. So you are going to have to get a kernel source and then the speakup patch from cvs and make your own kernel. Quite a takes for a new user.
