I thought speak up already came compiled in Ubuntu 6.10 edgy eft. Please
correct me if I'm wrong or someone needs to update the Ubuntu website.

Hi.
Yes, speakup is included in Ubuntu Edgy. It is built as a module, so
you will need to modprobe the driver for your synth, or add the name to
the /etc/modules file.
