Hi Kenny,

Can I still use a text console?  I'm currently using GRML but it's =
annoying
when the synth spells out everything.

Yes, Ubuntu does have software speech.  Since the livecd is a Gnome
desktop, you will be running Gnome instead of a text console when you
boot.
