Hi folks,
Is there a way to use an audible books account that lets you download the
book for say burning to a cd for reading in Linux?
Say a third party application from the command line?
Thanks,
Karen

I have not used audible.com, but I expect there is a way to get them.
If you mean audio books from nls I do that every day with edbrowse.

I am not talking about nls, i am specifically asking about the audible.com
site...which is why the subject line has the company name in it.

the company name is audible.com, not audible.
Good luck.

Hi Karen --
Your question got me curious since I use Audible all the time. It sounds
like there is an option to download a pdf but only for audiobooks that come
with a pdf. And it sort of implies that this is extra content and not
exactly the book itself that you can download. You may have already found
this info, but here is that page:
https://audible.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5046/c/3081/session/L3RpbWUvMTUzODY4NTE5My9nZW4vMTUzODY4NTE5My9zaWQvZlVjJTdFVldUZ2RmdDdZNXo1eFNiZmhydjRBZ3VZbVQlN0V2NkdUUDUzQUJlUmVKZjY1SUc3MUFaJTdFU1NJc2JiZHg1ampVWnA3MzA1M2lJdzl1OGwlN0VyTXNDekRSYzFNOE9ETF9QVnV5cE1BOElHMUJtREJEWE80UTlnU0ElMjElMjE%3D
But here is a better answer I think. I found this:
- Because Audible files are in either .aa or .aax format, we only
support iTunes for CD burning.
- At the request of our publishers, you are only allowed to burn each
audiobook in your library one time. This is to prevent mass distribution of
audiobooks and to protect all parties involved.
- You cannot burn Audible content to a DVD or MP3 disc.
I found that on this page, under a subheading of Restrictions.
https://audible.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9246/~/how-do-i-burn-my-audiobooks-onto-a-cd%3F
So sounds like they make it tough.

No. That's not the problem. Audible.com switched from
using the mp3 format to a proprietary one.
I can no longer play audible.com books on my mp3 player. If there were
a way to do it on linux, I'd be interested too.

If your goal is to read an audible.com book on Linux, I just checked
and the audible.com cloud player works great in Firefox running on
Debian 9.0.
I went to a book in my library, and clicked play, and it started
playing.

Hi Kathy,
That was most informative yes.
Just for my information, how do you access your audible content in Linux?
when reading the cd restrictions I smiled thinking that a grossly desperate
person could just make cd copies from the cd they burn but still.

In fact reading the information Kathy provided makes me wonder if
Audible.com staff has updated their own information.
The cd restrictions say you cannot burn them to an mp3 disc. The
discussion of audible.com book formats format 4 or enhanced, suggest
that the first format is best for an mp3 player..which as you say can no
longer play the books.

Hi Karen --
Unfortunately I have never tried it from Linux and just use my iPhone for
Audible. So from that perspective I'm not at all helpful. But your
question got me curious so I started looking into it. If I listen to
Audible on Linux I just fire up a browser and go into their web interface,
but I rarely do that. So again, I don't have any practical experience of
actually downloading the audio files locally and outside of iTunes.

If you download the .aa format books, you should be able to convert them
to a format that you can either play on an audio player or burn to a CD.
"we only support iTunes for burning to a CD." Seriously? It makes no
sense at all to restrict their books to be burned only by a competitor's
product. Someone over at Amazon has lost every little piece of their
mind if that's really the case.

The Archlinux wiki has a section explaining how to read audible books on
the command line. It works great for me. One can also use the same
procedure to convert them.
See this link:
